First Aid Training FAQ
How many trained First Aiders do I need in my workplace?
The Health and Safety (first aid) Regulations require you to provide 'adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to enable first aid to be given to your employees if they are injured or become ill at work'. What is considered adequate will depend on the circumstances of each organisation and the results of your first aid risk assessment. First aid personnel should be available at all times when people are at work and the numbers based on assessments of risk and number of employees. Factors such as remoteness from emergency services, shift work patterns and the type of work all have to be considered. You must also take into account holidays and sickness so an increased provision may be necessary to cover for absence.

What should we keep in a first aid box?
The specific contents of your first aid box would depend on the results of your workplace first aid needs assessment as depending on the injury risks identified in your work environment as additional items may be needed. However, the HSE does give guidance as to the minimum stock requirements of first aid kits where there are no special risks in the workplace. These recommendations are set out in the table below, if no running water is available in an eyewash station is also required.
Does the HSE First Aid at Work course have to be run over 3 consecutive days or can it be spread over a longer period?
We are able to arrange for courses to be split into three separate days over 3 weeks or more if required. Facts Training offers a flexible service and will always try to arrange training around your particular needs.
Can we have our course in the evening or at a weekend?
Yes, we can run your course at these times, there is a surcharge for Sundays and for courses run over more sessions than standard, e.g. a one day course run over 2 evenings. The additional charge is usually £50 + vat per session but we will confirm this at the time of booking and we do not have any hidden charges.
Can a person who is pregnant, has a back problem, or is disabled, train to be a First Aider?
Anyone can learn First Aid, however, your selection of suitable people should be based on their ability to respond in an emergency to the benefit of your work force. The HSE advises that the selection of First Aiders for First Aid at Work purposes depends on a number of factors such as: Reliability, disposition and communication skills.
Aptitude and ability to adsorb new knowledge and learn new skills.
Ability to cope with stressful and physically demanding emergency procedures.
That their normal duties allow them to go immediately and rapidly to an emergency situation.
What facilities do we need to provide for you to run a first aid course at our premises?
All training venues should comply with all current health and safety standards. For first aid courses sufficient space should be available for the number of delegates attending, ideally with at least 6m x 6m recommended for a full course of twelve people. The room should be large enough to seat everyone comfortably in a semicircle formation with open floor space in the centre. The floor area should be clean, uncluttered and ideally carpeted, as it will be used for the practical demonstrations during the course. An electric socket and table should be provided for the instructors training equipment at the front of the room. For 2 Day and 3 Day First Aid At Work Courses additional space will be required for individual assessments to take place on the final day of the course usually between 12.30pm and 5pm. Additional rooms are required for the practical assessments. For CIEH courses all participants should have a desk or table and no open floor space is required.
