How many First Aiders do we need to have?

The Health and Safety (first aid) Regulations require you to provide 'adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to enable first aid to be given to your employees if they are injured or become ill at work'. What is considered adequate will depend on the circumstances of each organisation and the results of your first aid risk assessment. First aid personnel should be available at all times when people are at work and the numbers based on assessments of risk and number of employees.

Factors such as remoteness from emergency services, shift work patterns and the type of work all have to be considered. You must also take into account holidays and sickness so an increased provision may be necessary to cover for absence.

The minimum provision on any work site is:

A suitably stocked first aid box

An appointed person to take charge of first aid arrangements

The HSE gives guidance as to the suggested number of first aid personnel that should be in place, this information is set out in the table below and can be found on the HSE website at www.hse.gov.uk.

Category of risk Numbers employed at any location Suggested number of first aid personnel
Lower risk
eg shops and offices, libraries
Fewer than 50At least one appointed person
50-100At least one first aider
More than 100One additional first aider for every 100 employed

20-100At least one first aider for every 50 employed (or part thereof)
More than 100One additional first aider for every 100 employed
Higher risk
eg most construction, slaughter houses, chemical manufacture, extensive work with dangerous machinery or sharp instruments

5-50At least one first aider
More than 50One additional first aider for every 50 employed

What is the difference between an Appointed Person and a First Aider?

An Appointed Person is someone you choose who should be available at all times to:

a) Take charge when someone at work is injured or become ill, e.g. call for an ambulance if required.

b) Look after the first aid equipment, e.g. re-stocking the first aid box. Appointed Persons should not attempt to give first aid for which they have not been trained. One day Emergency First Aid courses are available for this purpose. Facts Training Ltd can arrange one day courses to provide suitable training and would be happy to offer advice regarding your particular training needs.

A First Aider is someone who has undergone a training course in administering first aid at work and holds a current HSE Approved First Aid At Work certificate. You may decide, following your first aid assessment, that you need one or more First Aider. A First Aider can undertake the duties of an appointed person. The training organisation who delivers your First Aid At Work course has to have been approved by HSE. Facts Training Ltd is approved by the HSE to deliver First Aid At Work courses, our HSE approval certificate number is 1132/92.

Does the HSE First Aid at Work course have to be run on 4 consecutive days or can it be spread over a longer period?

We often arrange for courses to be split into four separate days or two groups of two days. Facts Training Ltd offers a flexible service and will always try to arrange training around your particular needs.

Can we have our course in the evening or at a weekend?

Yes, we can run your course at these times, there is a surcharge for Sundays and for courses run over more sessions that standard, e.g. a one day course run over 2 evenings. Contact us for details of these charges

Can a person who is pregnant, has a back problem, or is disabled, train to be a First Aider?

Anyone can learn First Aid, however, your selection of suitable people should be based on their ability to respond in an emergency to the benefit of your work force. The HSE advises that the selection of First Aiders for First Aid at Work purposes depends on a number of factors such as: Reliability, disposition and communication skills.

Aptitude and ability to adsorb new knowledge and learn new skills.

Ability to cope with stressful and physically demanding emergency procedures.

That their normal duties allow them to go immediately and rapidly to an emergency situation.

What facilities do we need to provide for an on site first aid course?

All training venues should comply with all current health and safety standards. For first aid courses sufficient space should be available for the number of delegates attending, ideally with at least 6m x 6m recommended for a full course of twelve people. The room should be large enough to seat everyone comfortably in a semicircle formation with open floor space in the centre. The floor area should be clean, uncluttered and ideally carpeted, as it will be used for the practical demonstrations during the course. An electric socket and table should be provided for the instructors training equipment at the front of the room.

For 2-Day and 4-Day First Aid At Work Courses additional space will be required for individual assessments to take place on the final day of the course usually between 1pm and 4pm. Two separate rooms are required for the practical assessments and a third location will be required as a waiting area for the remaining delegates while they are not being assessed.

For CIEH courses all participants should have a desk or table and no open floor space is required.

My First Aid At Work certificate has expired, can I still renew it by attending a 2 day refresher course?

You can renew your First Aid At Work qualification by attending a 2 day refresher course within one month of expiry of your original certificate. Ideally you should renew your certificate before it expires, when you attend a refresher course you will need to bring your original certificate with you as evidence of your qualification. If your certificate expired more than a month ago you will need to attend a full 4 day First Aid At Work course again.

If I need to cancel a course will there be any charges?

If you need to cancel a course you should let us know as soon as possible, if you give us more than 2 weeks notice there will be no cancellation charge. If we have less than 2 weeks notice we reserve the right to charge the following cancellation fees:

7 to 14 days notice - 50% of the course cost.

Less than 7 days notice - 100% of the course cost.

What should be kept in our first aid box?

The specific contents of your first aid box would depend on your workplace first aid risk assessment. However, the HSE does give guidance as to the minimum stock requirements of first aid kits where there are no special risks in the workplace. These recommendations are set out in the table below, if no running water is available in an eyewash station is also required.
